Whitstable Brewery is planning to open their first micro pub…in Faversham.

Hoping to open the town’s second miniature ale house, the brewers, based in Maidstone, have set their sights on a shop in Preston Street.

Currently Able Glass, a window glazing company, Whitstable Brewery has submitted a planning application seeking approval for change of use from retail to micro pub.

Faversham already has one micro pub, Furlongs Ale House, which opened in December, just down the road in Preston Street.

Whitstable Brewery has been around for the last 12 years and supplies their popular ales and lagers across the South East and even up north in Nottingham and Yorkshire.

But this will be their first micro pub.

Head of sales Tim Abbott said: “We are already really looking forward to it and hope we can get planning permission as soon as possible.

“We are looking to bring something different into the town. We want to open a lovely place to go and grab a drink at a reasonable price.

“We want a conversational atmosphere all inside this great building, which is Grade II listed.”

Ales, lagers, wines, ciders and craft beers, as well as a small food offering, will be available if the brewers are given planning permission.

Head brewer Rafik Abidi said: “Having supplied a number of micro pubs across the county, we thought why don’t we do something ourselves?

“Choice and availability in public houses is still very limited due to the tied pubs system. This in turn is forcing many otherwise viable pubs to close as customers are demanding better choice and quality of beer at reasonable prices.

“This is in essence what our micro pub will offer and we believe Faversham needs something like this.

“Our ethos is simple, to be known as the place to discover what the best brewers in Kent and Britain are creating. Our intention is to bring together the excellent products of Britain’s finest independent breweries and beer enthusiasts under one roof.”

The opening of another micro pub would total two in the town.

Nearby Whitstable also has two with the Black Dog and Handsome Sam and Herne Bay has three.
