The owner of riding stables say he is devastated after thieves ransacked a tack room and stole specialist equestrian equipment worth up to £80,000.

They broke into the building in Throwley last night using a crow bar and took at least 15 saddles and other kit specifically made for dressage.

The stables are run by international dressage rider and trainer David Rumsey whose staff discovered the break-in this morning.

"I'm devastated because they've taken a lifetime's collection of beautiful, custom made tack as well as many items belonging to my clients," he said.

He believes the gang, who are thought to have used a vehicle to take away the haul, may not realise how specialised the equipment is and how difficult it will be to sell on.

"It really is of no use other than for dressage and the word has already gone out about it in those circles all over the country," he added.

Mr Rumsey, 36, who has been competing since he was 18, says the thieves managed to breach numerous security measures and avoided an alarm being triggered.

"The losses are immense and include numerous bridles, girths and even hats. Some of it will be insured but not all," he said.

"Although we are not competing at present, we are still able to to some training while observing social distancing and there are 10 horses who still need exercising.

"But the police have been excellent and we here promptly along with scenes of crimes officers to get any fingerprints.

"I am also hoping that someone nearby has CCTV which may have picked up the vehicle the thieves used."
