Part of a motorway was closed this morning after a car fire caused smoke to billow across the carriageway.

The London-bound side of the M2 between Faversham and Sittingbourne was shut after the vehicle went up in flames just before 8am.

It was moved to the hard shoulder and one lane was re-opened, but rush-hour traffic continued to queue.

Both lanes had re-opened by 9.15am, but drivers still faced delays of 30 minutes. Traffic was back to normal by 10.30am.

A police spokesman said: "Police were called to the M2 between junctions 5 and 6 London-bound at 7.53am this morning following a report of a car fire.

"The incident caused tailbacks of approximately two to three miles. Kent Fire and Rescue Service were called to deal with the fire."
