A Faversham man who spent his childhood witnessing the tragedies of war-torn Sierra Leone has produced a song and music video about his experiences.

Showers Jalloh, 32, of Abbeyfields, grew up in the west African country during what he calls a “long and tenuous war”.

His father died when Showers was just nine-years-old, and his family moved from place to place in a desperate bid to find a safe refuge, fleeing towns ripped apart by a civil war that killed hundreds.

As well as his father, Showers lost many relatives and friends.

The former Abbey School teaching assistant has been a musician for many years and devoted his song, Broken Children, to the youngsters still living in treacherous conditions in Africa - and now dealing with the Ebola outbreak.

Showers said: “So many people have lost their lives to both Ebola and the war. They never seem to have a break.

“I was lucky to come out of the war unharmed. It was a terrifying time and fighting was everywhere.

“I like to speak about unity and peace and hope. I’ve seen too much fighting. This is what I have tried to reflect in my song.”

The song features images of children in Sierra Leone and videos of Showers, which were filmed in London both outside and inside a studio.

Showers still has relatives in Sierra Leone and only moved to England in 2009 after living in Gambia for a number of years.

He added: “I have travelled around the world and seen so much disaster – poverty, illness, war. I want to give people hope.

“I want to support people back home in my country and I want them to see there is a future and a way out of that way of life.”

The video has already had more than 1,000 views on YouTube and is available for download on iTunes.

Showers will be performing in Dover on July 17 and hopes to play at Faversham’s Hop Festival in September.
