When Kelly Wicks’ partner went downstairs for a cigarette, he never thought he would be returning 10 minutes later to discover she had given birth.
Kelly, 33, delivered Chalice Donna Rose single-handedly in her bedroom within a matter of minutes and paramedics said they had never heard anything like it.
The mum-of-six who was once told she could not have children defied the odds again and gave birth to Chalice two weeks early at home in Whiting Crescent.
She said: “Ryan went downstairs at about midnight and a few minutes later I thought maybe I’d go down there too.
“As I turned, I felt a sharp pain and suddenly I knew she was coming. Within minutes I was guiding her head out and with a second push, she was here.
“I didn’t know what to do but just made sure she was OK.
“I screamed down to Ryan for help and he came running up saying ‘are you having contractions?’ I pulled the quilt up and showed him Chalice.”
An ambulance and a midwife arrived within half an hour but Kelly already had a healthy 5lb 2oz baby and once the umbilical cord was cut, there was no need for a trip to the hospital.
Childhood sweethearts Kelly and Ryan, who have been together 19 years after meeting at Davington Primary School and going on to the Abbey School, have five other children, 13-year-old twins Kaideen and Chloe, Toby, six, Rion, five, and two-year-old Ellody Grace.
Other than Rion, who was also born at home, they all came into the world at Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate within normal times.
Kelly said: “All the kids were asleep but Ellody must have heard me screaming and wandered in saying ‘baby, baby, baby’.
“I didn’t even know she could say baby but maybe she new Chalice was on her way.
“There was no pain. It was like my body had gone into a trance. I was totally relaxed and it just happened, but I have been shaky ever since.
“It was just so crazy and I can’t believe it happened like that.
“My friends and family are so shocked by it and I think Ryan is also just in complete shock.
“People keep asking me when I’m going to have another one. I thought Chalice might be my last but now I know how to deliver them on my own, I might as well have another.”
