A potential railway romance has left a town on tenterhooks after a woman’s anonymous social media message sparked a search for her mystery man.
The Facebook post was left in the Faversham Residents Group, with the female author attempting to track down the “friendly and attractive” rail worker who had kept her company.
In the post last night (January 3) she explained she was simply “shooting [her] shot” after their warm encounter at Faversham station.
She added: “I’m brave but not brave enough to post who I am in case they weren’t on the vibe I was.
“I was at Faversham station at about 4.30pm waiting for a train after delays from Whitstable.
“I got chatting to one of the guys who works there and before I got to ask him or work out if he was single we all got rushed onto the train.
“He was friendly and attractive with a nice smile and I’d like to have kept chatting to him.
“So, if anyone knows a guy in his 30s who was working platform 1 and 2, can you help a girl out and show him this post or find out if he’s single and, if he is, see if he liked the brunette he was chatting to who was wearing a big white fluffy scarf with sunglasses on her head?
“We were chatting about house prices and how I was mad for coming down to the beach on a freezing cold day like this.
“If you’re not single or not interested, never mind – but it’s worth a shot”.
The post ended up getting a huge reaction from people on social media, with many local residents rooting for the man to be found.
“This has brought a huge smile on my face but need updates lol,” commented one woman.
“Fortune favours the brave! Good luck!” added another. “Let us know what happens!! Gavin & Stacey vibes”.
While others were just happy to hear of the potential connection, commenting: “Those were the days - meeting people in real life situations, having random conversations and connecting with someone.”
And much to everyone’s delight, the mystery man, 33-year-old Shaun Backett, replied under the post soon after.
He wrote: “Hi this was me. We were talking about how cold Whitstable was today, lol.”
The original anonymous woman then replied: “Hey! First of all, I hope this hasn’t weirded you out. I can’t believe this worked.
“I’ve no idea what your situation is but if you’re single and this hasn’t completely scared you, lemme know and I will message you.
"If not, thanks for the chat anyway – and giving the whole of Faversham something to talk about.”
Shaun Backett, who lives in Sheerness, wrote back: “Ha! Ha! Don’t be daft. U can always message. I do remember the convo.”
It’s a great place to work at and I’ll go the extra mile to help anyone
Speaking to KentOnline today (January 4), he said he’s glad his customer service skills have been recognised.
He explained: “My job is massively based on customer service and ultimately it’s nice to be recognised as doing a good job.
“I haven’t spoken to the woman as it was an anonymous post, my priority is being professional in my workplace and continuing to provide the best service I can in line with company requirements.”
And despite a few negative comments from ex partners, he joked: “I’m happy to rise above it and be the better person.”
“It was very surreal at the time and still now but my main focus is being the best I can be at what I do.
“It’s a great place to work at and I’ll go the extra mile to help anyone and if that means standing in the cold chatting to someone about the weather then that’s what I shall do”.
As for the prospect of a future romance, Shaun added in a follow up post: “There is no date, as previously explained I was doing my job and I absolutely appreciate every single response, people have taken time out of their day and night to compliment me and acknowledge what I’ve done and I couldn’t be more thankful.”
