All lanes which were blocked have since reopened as of 6.35pm but National Highways says there’s still four miles of congestion, causing long delays.

According to traffic monitoring tool Inrix, three cars are involved and there’s been a fuel spillage.

An eyewitness at the scene told KentOnline police and ambulance crews were in attendance just before junction 6 at around 6pm and the "traffic is really bad”.

"I'm going coastbound, and the traffic is building up,” he added. “People have got out of their cars.

"A car might have been on fire. There are at least two involved, and their bonnets are both crumpled."

A police spokesperson said: “Police attended a collision involving three vehicles on the coastbound carriageway of the M2 near junction 5 and 6.

“Officers were called to the scene at 5.22pm on Thursday, July 18. One man reported minor injuries.

“Following vehicle recovery, the road was clear by around 7pm.”
