An injured Transit van driver was helped by a passing consultant after his van crashed on the M2.

He was helped until the ambulance arrived, by consultant from Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital Margate, who saw the accident on the M2 motorway near Faversham on Tuesday morning.

The van driver suffered a severe head wound and concussion after his van hit the central reservation and crashed down the embankment through a post and rail fence into a field.

The vehicle ended up on its roof.

He had to be lifted onto a spinal board from the scene after Sittingbourne and Faversham firefighters cleared debris, before being taken to the QEQM Hospital.

A Ford Escort was also involved in the accident, but the driver was not injured despite the vehicle coming to rest on the embankment.

The accident happened on the coastal bound carriageway, about one mile from Faversham, junction six.

Sittingbourne fire crew manager Matt Barney, said: "He was very lucky. The consultant who stopped, assisted paramedics and ambulance staff.

"He just happened to be driving by."
