Moment Preston Street, Faversham, cracks apart as bus drives over burst water main

A shocking video shows the moment a town centre road cracked apart as a bus drove over a burst water main.

Oscar’s Bakery in Preston Street, Faversham, had to shut for the day on December 5 until repairs were be made.

Owner Stephanie Flynn first discovered an issue when she had no running water inside her bread and pastry shop at 6am.

She told the News: “I’d heard a noise and thought it was water-related so we checked the tap.

“Then I went out the front door and it was bubbling.

“I have no idea when we might be able to reopen.

“We’ve been told it will be fixed today but we don’t know what time.

“I’m hoping to be open as usual tomorrow morning.”

The road has since been reopened, and the hole has been repaired.

In the footage posted on social media, Mrs Flynn informs customers that the bakery will be closed due to the dry taps and a cellar full of water.

Suddenly, a Stagecoach bus drives over the area, causing water to shoot into the air and leaving a crater in the road.

Mrs Flynn added: “I own the business with my husband Chris and it’s actually his birthday today.

“So, it’s more of a c****y birthday than a happy birthday.”

It is not yet known if other businesses in Preston Street have had to shut but a technician has been sent to the road to make the area safe.

South East Water’s distribution manager (Stour) said: “We’re sorry to customers and businesses in the Preston Road area of Faversham who currently have no water while we repair a burst main.

“We were made aware of a bus driving over the burst site and creating further damage, so we sent a technician out to make the area safe until we could arrive to repair the pipe.

“Our contractors are now on site, and repairs are underway.”
