STUNNED friends and neighbours of a couple found murdered at their home have spoken of a happy pair who were often seen holding hands.

Vera Martin, 78, and her 72-year-old husband Terry, who lived at Abbey Street, Faversham, are thought to have died from head injuries.

Their bodies were discovered on Wednesday morning.

Businesswoman and former journalist Griselda Mussett, who lives opposite the dead couple's home, said: “This is terribly shocking, very sad.

“They have lived there for a lot longer than any of us newcomers. Terry and Vera and were very good neighbours, and they loved their car.”

The couple are believed to have lived in the town for most of their lives and Mr Martin had worked as a drayman at Whitbread.

Brian Warrad, the landlord of the Phoenix pub, which is opposite the murder scene, said: “I knew the couple well. They have lived there a long time.” He said Mrs Martin had been born in the house.

Town and county councillor Tom Gates said: “I must have known them for 20 years to say hello to and have a joke with. They seemed to be a very happy couple, always laughing and joking and holding hands.”

Another neighbour said: “They were a quiet couple who kept themselves to themselves and were always very helpful.”
