THREE quick-thinking sixth formers thwarted arsonists trying to burn down their school gym.

The boys raised the alarm and helped tackle the flames after the fire broke out during an open evening at Abbey School in Faversham.

Neil Larrett, Darren Collins, both 17, and Daniel Wooller, 16, have now been praised by staff.

Head teacher Peter Walker said: "The prompt action of the boys saved the building. The spirit they showed in dealing with that was highly commendable. I'm extremely proud of them." Darren said: "We think we caught it in time."

Police believe the incident was linked to one earlier on Thursday night when two boys, one of whom is known to school authorities, were escorted from the premises having cycled around the grounds shouting abuse.

They were reported to have made threats against the school while they were being led away. Police are examining CCTV evidence.
