Thieves stole four wheels from a parked car and then prowled the town looking for targets, smashing windows as they went.
Dozens of car windows were broken last Wednesday night in Hazebrouck Road and then across the town in Wallers Road.
A woman, who did not want to be named, said her Ford Focus was write-off as the wheels would cost more than £3,000 to replace.
She said: “We couldn’t believe it. We had a walk around and spoke to neighbours and a number of cars had their passenger windows smashed too.”
Police spokesman Martin Very said: “The car was on a driveway and a window was smashed to gain access to the locking wheel nut.”
Over in Wallers Road, another car window was smashed between 1.30am and 2am on Thursday, January 5.
A witness said they saw a man in dark clothing shining a torch into parked vehicles.
