A main road into a Kent town is set to close for emergency work to repair a gas leak.
The A2 London Road, Faversham, is set to be sealed off at 9am tomorrow between Love Lane and Brenley Corner – and will not reopen for five days.
A temporary traffic light system had already been installed so that gas firm SGN could repair the leak.
But further investigations revealed the problem has been caused by a crack in the pipe and it will, therefore, require both sides of the road to be dug up to install a replacement.
A traffic notice posted by Faversham Town Council on Facebook reads: “Given the nature and complexity of the excavation, it has been deemed unsafe by Kent County Council to keep the road open while the works take place.
“We have looked at various options of working as we realise the impact that closing this road will have to road users, however it is the only safe way to do this for contractors and the public.”
There will be two diversions in place, one for local traffic and another for motorway traffic.
Engineers will be on the site for extended working hours.
The route also straddles the boundaries of the parishes of Boughton-Under-Blean and Graveney with Goodnestone.
