A young woman aged in her 20s has been identified after she was hit by a train and killed at a level crossing, police have confirmed.
Police and ambulance crews attended after she was struck between Faversham and Whitstable yesterday.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene in Monkshill Road in Graveney after emergency services raced to the crossing on Sunday afternoon.
The incident prompted severe delays to rail services throughout the afternoon and a replacement bus service was put in place by Southeastern.
A tweet from a passenger on the train suggested the person to have been hit may be a cyclist.
A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Following a report of a person struck by a train, officers attended along with local emergency services but unfortunately a female was pronounced dead at the scene.
"The incident is currently being treated as non suspicious."
Police added the woman's next of kin has been informed and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
A spokesman for Secamb (South East Coast Ambulance) said: "At 2.08pm on Sunday we sent two cars to a report of a patient being struck by a train at a level crossing. Sadly nothing could be done for the patient who was declared deceased on scene."
A statement from Southeastern said: "Our thoughts go out to the people affected by the incident this afternoon."
