Upbeat Ray Turner hopes Faversham have laid some building blocks which will help them turn the corner after a torrid start to the season in Bostik South.
Town brought an end to a run of seven straight defeats in all competitions with a goalless draw at home to Cray Wanderers on Tuesday night, just their fourth clean sheet in 18 games this season and against a side who hit eight on Saturday.
Although they were knocked out of the FA Trophy 2-1 at Waltham Abbey on Saturday, Town impressed in the second half, without conceding and Town boss Turner said: “That’s 45 and then another 90 minutes without conceding on Tuesday.
“These are little building blocks you need to help you get out of a predicament like we are in. I hope we have turned a corner.
"It’s been a pretty torrid couple of weeks but the players I have here now want to work and the ones that didn’t want to pull together are out of the club. It’s boring but as a manager the first job is to get your organisation right.
“We were playing against a side who had scored eight at the weekend (in an 8-0 rout of Horsham in the FA Trophy) with plenty of attacking talent and we gave them a tough game and might have won it had we not had two goals disallowed. It’s something for us to build on."
Turner paid tribute to the fans who have stuck by his squad, adding: “Tuesday was a positive night and that was recognised by the supporters.
“I want to thank the handful who were there at Waltham Abbey too, who saw how hard we worked in the second half and gave us a good send-off at the end.
"They are the ones who go everywhere with us and we appreciate their support.
“I’m sure there have been grumblings on social media but I’m not on it so I don’t see it.
“No manager would ever want to rebuild his side in the middle of a season but I’m having to. I have been at the top of the league with this club and now we are at the bottom but I am determined to get it right and get this group away from there.”
The quest starts at Hastings on Saturday (3pm) before a trip to Phoenix Sports on Tuesday (7.45pm) and Turner admitted: “It doesn’t get much easier but we want to pick up points and pull away from the bottom.
“We have set little targets, we want to overhaul the team in front of us (Guernsey) and then close that four-point gap to Hastings (in 17th).
“It’s been a turbulent first quarter of the season but hopefully we can look forward with some optimism.”
Matt Bourne and Carl Rook are suspended for Saturday but are back on Tuesday, when George Monger is suspended after collecting five bookings and Liam King misses the first of three matches while he attends a family wedding.
