Faversham boss Sammy Moore has urged non-league players to consider private insurance in the wake of the serious injury to Jefferson Aibangbee.
The on-loan forward broke his leg against Lydd earlier this month and the club have supported him through a go-fund me page.
As a former professional, Moore is supported by the PFA but that’s not the case for most players in the non-league game.
“It’s difficult at this level,” said Moore. “There’s private insurance that you can get.
“If you were in the pro game like I was and then drop into non-league, the pro game still looks after you so I’m quite fortunate in that sense.
“It’s something that players should have, or at least be looking into. I know there’s a few private companies that offer that to non-league players. We as a football club try and do the best we can.
“They should go out and get their own insurance. One injury or one unfortunate injury and you’re relying on it.
“Most of our boys have played at a good level so most have got their own insurances and some will have the PFA who can look after them.
“As a football club and as a player, it’s something we will look into and what we can do but we’re making sure the boy is okay first and foremost.”
On the progress of Aibangbee, Moore said: “The operation went well so that’s good news. As a football club we’re trying to help him and his family as much as we can. There’s a go-fund me page that people can donate to.
“He was a big player for us, he was in great form last season and that’s the reason we wanted to bring him in, because he adds goals and energy.
“We’re gutted for him. The players and staff are in close contact with him and I know the chairman and the board went to see him when he was in hospital.
“He’s at home now but he’s got great support from this club and we’ll continue to do that.”
Faversham, who were held to a goalless draw at Lordswood in Southern Counties East on Tuesday night, host the same opponents this Saturday in the Kent Senior Trophy Second Round.
