Faversham Town boss James Collins says he has been pleased with new signing Marcus Elliott's first two performances for the club ahead of their match at Hythe Town

Manager James Collins believes new Faversham recruit Marcus Elliott brings proven Isthmian League pedigree to his squad.

The ex-Lewes forward had scored six goals for Isthmian South East rivals VCD this season before he linked up with the Lilywhites, making his debut in their 3-2 home defeat to promotion-chasing Ramsgate on Saturday.

He was in Town’s side again on Tuesday, as Collins’ men beat Corinthian 3-1 on penalties in the third round of the Velocity Trophy after a goalless draw.

Collins said: “We are reliant a lot on bringing youngsters in and trying to turn players from the league below into gems but, every so often, I think you need to bring in a proven player - not just at this level but the league above.

“Probably the most important thing is that he is a good person.

"He has come in and bonded straight away with all the boys. I’m pleased with his two performances.”

Elliott, who headed a Clark Woodcock cross against the bar in the second half, was among the Faversham players to score a penalty at Salters Lane.

Captain Harry Harding - who struck twice against Ramsgate - and Woodcock were on target in the shoot-out, too, while keeper Patrick Ohman made two spot-kick saves, with a Corinthian player firing another penalty over the crossbar.

Collins added: “I wanted Tyrell Richardson-Brown to take a penalty because he hasn’t scored yet, but there was a clean sheet for Calvin (Sedenu, a defender recently signed from Kennington) and the whole back four. We have been conceding too many goals lately.

“That probably comes from the fact we are having to constantly change things around. But there was a clean sheet and we created chances, so we’re pleased to be in the next round.”

Keeper Ohman has made costly mistakes in Faversham’s four-match losing run in the league but put in a good performance in midweek. He made important saves in either half before the match went to penalties.

“He had a really good game, made two really good saves and I’m pleased for him,” admitted Collins, who confirmed first-choice keeper Luke Watkins has now been ruled out for the season.

“I think he saved three in the Hythe one (in the Kent Senior Cup shoot-out loss) as well, although we still managed to blow it. I’m pleased for him more so because he took a bit of stick after the game the other day and it’s not nice after you make a mistake.

“It’s a lonely place but it’s a great reaction from him.”

Town, who are 14th, visit third-bottom Hythe this Saturday.

“You don’t get any easy games at this level. It’s going to be tough,” conceded Collins.

“But if we play like we have in the last two games, I’m confident we can get a win.”

Teenager Benedict Bioletti injured his ankle while back on trial with League 2 strugglers Colchester recently, while midfielder Sam Bewick (hamstring) is rated as “touch-and-go” as to whether he will be fit enough to be involved.
