Finn Smart-Weeden missed out on a points finish at Oulton Park but learned a lot.
The Faversham rider, competing in the British Junior Supersport event, had a ‘massive moment’ in race one at the first corner of lap three, coming out of the seat.
Smart-Weeden managed to hold on but when he came down he hit the gear lever hard and pulled it out of its fitting, which meant he had to ride the remaining eight laps stuck in fourth gear, using the clutch, brakes and throttle to manage speeds. He still managed to overtake a couple of other racers and finished 19th.
He did, however, destroy the clutch and boil the brakes which meant mechanic dad had a lot of work to do to get it roadworthy for Sunday’s race.
His second outing was quite a physical battle with another rider, swapping places throughout the race, but Smart-Weeden was ecstatic to take him on the line and finish ahead by 0.09 seconds - half a wheel length. Achieving an average speed greater than 95% of the winners’ in both races means Finn picked up two more points towards his national licence.
