Faversham Town coach Darren Hare looks ahead to home match against Haywards Heath Town and Kent derby at Hythe Town

Coach Darren Hare has described Faversham’s home match against Haywards Heath as one of the biggest of his career.

Sammy Moore’s Lilywhites, who saw their scheduled encounter at promotion-chasing Beckenham postponed last weekend, are back at the foot of Isthmian South East.

With matches rapidly running out, they are 10 points adrift of third-bottom VCD and 11 behind this Saturday’s visitors Haywards Heath, who occupy the two relegation play-off places.

“We’re doing everything we can as a management team and the players are up for it,” said Hare ahead of Town’s Easter schedule, which also includes Monday’s trip to play-off chasing Hythe.

“They cannot wait for it.

"It’s one of their biggest games and it’s one of the biggest games in my career.”

There’s little - if any - margin for error for Town if they are to produce an unlikely escape.

Highly experienced coach Hare, also a former PE teacher at The Abbey School, said: “We have got 24 points.

“If we can get to 39 or 37 points, that will be close. We just need to plan for the Haywards Heath game, then quickly recover over the weekend.

“Haywards Heath have four games left. Realistically, they only need a win to survive - hopefully, it’s not against us! VCD’s the same.

“But VCD play on Friday so, if they lose, we’ll have two games in hand on them.

"I think there’s still some twists and turns in the season.

“If we can take it to the end, that will be a fantastic achievement.

"But we need to rely on other teams a little bit as well.

“We’re realists and know it will be very, very tough, but I believe in the group.”

Faversham will visit Reachfields to take on an eighth-placed Hythe team going for a top-five finish - where Hare will come up against manager Steve Watt, who he worked with at Hastings.

Hare said: “Hythe is not going to be an easy game, either. They’re on the outskirts of the play-offs.

“Steve Watt is a very good coach and a very good manager. He used to work with me down at Hastings.

“We just need a little bit of luck.

“He will want to get Hythe into the play-offs so the next two games for them are very important. But if we can win on Saturday, it will be a tight game at Hythe.

“If we can get six points, then we can see what we have got left.”

Town’s scheduled fixture at Beckenham was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and that has been rearranged for Tuesday, April 18 - just four days before the season ends.

“We were keen to play,” said Hare, the dad of Dagenham defender Josh Hare.

“Obviously, that puts that game back to the final week of the season but it is what it is.

“Other games were called off as well, so we’re not making any bones about that. We still have five games left but it is a bit frustrating.”

Young defender Harrison Byford has returned to National League South Dover after the end of his loan spell.
