Faversham frontman Stuart King has lifted the lid on the anguish behind his barren spell in front of goal.
The 28-year-old has scored for fun at clubs including Herne Bay, Maidstone and Folkestone, where he netted 44 goals in 47 starts, but had scored just once this season before Saturday’s double in Saturday's 2-1 win over Dorking.
The run followed King’s crucial penalty miss in Town’s play-off semi-final shootout defeat last season and the striker admits he has been “trying too hard” to prove his worth.
He admitted: “It’s been the first blip of my career, really, and to be honest it’s done me a bit mentally. I’ve had to take a long look at myself.
“I started pre-season quite well, but the goals have dried up. I think I’ve probably been trying too hard.”
He revealed: “I’ve stepped back, had a weekend off and chatted at length to Ray (boss Turner).
“I’ve gone back to basics, really. I was probably drawing wide rather than staying central, I was not finishing the way I’m used to. I was taking a touch or trying to play a one-two, trying to score a perfect goal rather than just doing what came naturally.
“I wasn’t being instinctive. I was maybe over-thinking things. It was a blip, but I have dug in and hopefully I can get past it. It was just a bad patch.”
Town’s fortunes have mirrored King’s own as they fell off the pace in Ryman League Division 1 South but King added: “We’re only a couple of months into the season.
“We’ve had a blip – every team has them – but hopefully we can get on a winning run now, go back to being hard to beat and I’m sure we’ll get back up there where we belong.”
