Faversham Town manager Tommy Warrilow expects plenty of twists and turns in title race as VCD Athletic overtake Lilywhites at the summit

Tommy Warrilow expects there will be plenty of twists and turns in the title race as Faversham look to get back on track.

Three Southern Counties East League Premier Division draws in four games for the Lilywhites has dented their promotion prospects and put rivals VCD in pole position.

It doesn’t get any easier for Town boss Warrilow’s team, either, with this weekend’s top-three home game against Punjab United being followed by a trip to Tunbridge Wells on Tuesday.

“You get some games where you just don’t play that well throughout the season,” said Warrilow, whose side shared the spoils from a 2-2 draw at Erith & Belvedere on Saturday after last Wednesday’s goalless trip to Lydd.

“That was the case on Saturday but, to be fair, I’ve not said that much this season.

“We created chances - although not to the extent we had done in the previous few games - and we didn’t turn up, really. We have dropped two points.

“A week is a long time in football. Last week, it was ours to throw away and, this week, it’s VCD’s to throw away.

“But I’ve been in football long enough to know there will be loads of twists and turns. There’s still 30 points for us to play for.

“We just need to get our performance levels back to where they should be and, with that, the results will come.”

Forward Johan Caney-Bryan put Faversham into an eighth-minute advantage with his first league goal since mid-January at Park View Road and, although a Tunde Aderonmu double put the Deres in front, Caney-Bryan grabbed a point on 87 minutes.

Warrilow said: “One thing with Johan is he will always give you everything he has got.

“Hopefully, that calms him down a little bit. Whether it was becoming a bit of a burden for him, only he will know that.

“In the last 10 games, we have just got to deliver and worry about ourselves.”

Warrilow has reunited with Tommie Fagg at Salters Lane, although the midfielder wasn’t fit enough to face Erith & Belvedere, as he recovers from an injury sustained at previous club Hastings.

“I know Faggie from our Ashford days,” said Warrilow, who has also re-signed attacking midfielder Rolando Onu on dual registration from Isthmian Premier side Dover this week. “He’s a shoe-in in the changing room where he knows all the lads.

“It’s a great signing - a great signing for now and a great signing for the future. He’s had a little bit of a tough ride this season, but he just needs to come in and concentrate on his football.

“We just need to see how many games we can get out of him this season.

"But he just needs to relax, enjoy his football and, with that, the performances will come.”

Next up is the visit of Chipie Sian’s promotion-chasing Punjab side, who the Lilywhites beat 3-0 through a Tashi-Jay Kwayie treble in early November.

Former Gillingham youngster Roman Campbell has found his groove for the Gravesend side.

The 24-year-old forward has scored nine goals in his first six matches.

Warrilow said: “With Punjab, I knew they would be up there.

“They have got some very good players and, obviously, they have brought Roman in and he’s banging in goals for them. He seems to have found a new lease of life.

“But there’s no easy games in this league.

“Just look at Lydd, they beat Glebe 5-0, drew with us and then beat Fisher 1-0 on Saturday. I don’t know how they’re down there, anyway, because they have got some good players.

“Hopefully for them, they’re starting to get out of it.”

Faversham only played Tunbridge Wells at home in mid-February, winning 4-0 through two-goal Nathan Wood, Kwayie and substitute Frannie Collin, although Tunbridge Wells have only played one league game at their Culverden Stadium since the end of October.
