It’s one match at a time for Faversham Town.
There’s plenty of excitement, with the Salters Lane club preparing for their scheduled first home match on their new 3G pitch next weekend after they earned a 3-1 FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round victory at Eastbourne Town on Saturday.
But while manager Sammy Moore would love a cup run, promotion from the Southern Counties East Premier Division this season is their priority and they visit Corinthian in the league this Saturday before Wednesday’s trip to Lydd.
Moore said: “We’ve got good characters in the dressing room that will not allow that [complacency].
“It’s one game at a time. I know it’s a cliche - but we’re not looking any further. We will look at Corinthian and then pick a team accordingly.
“I don’t think we’ve got the boys that will get carried away in the FA Cup. It’s always a nice distraction from the league.
“But we have got a tough game against Corinthian.
“They won 5-1 on the opening weekend [against Kennington], so we know it won’t be easy.”
Striker Warren Mfula bagged a brace with an own goal completing their tally as Faversham progressed in the FA Cup.
Moore was pleased with his team’s display despite conceding a late goal.
“It was a really good result,” he reflected. “Obviously, the FA Cup always brings up tricky ties.
“We had Eastbourne watched and knew what we were coming up against but the main thing was controlling our performance.
“First 20 minutes, we could have been four or five up, but we didn’t take our opportunities.
“Once we got ahead, we looked comfortable. I didn’t particularly enjoy the performance, it got a bit scrappy, but that happens in FA Cup games.
“Obviously, travelling to Eastbourne is never easy. We got a coach there and there was a good atmosphere on the way back.
“I was delighted to get another three goals. I was disappointed not to keep a clean sheet but it was a good strike by their fella.
“The chairman, Gary Smart, said it was his first win in the FA Cup as a chairman.”
There’s a hectic period in store for Faversham, who also plan to hold an open training session on Monday night to give fans the chance to look at their upgraded facilities.
Weekend hosts Corinthian - like the Lilywhites - were relegated from Isthmian South East last term.
“Corinthian are a good side with good management,” noted Moore ahead of their trip to Gay Dawn Farm.
“I think they have kept nine from last season’s squad. They’ve started really well this year.
“When you go to the Farm, you know it’s never easy.
“But we will head there confident.”
They’ll visit Lydd, now managed by former Hythe player-boss James Rogers and ex-Gillingham, Dartford and Dover defender Tom Wynter, after that.
“It’s never easy,” said Moore. “It’s no secret that they’re a club with money.
“They’ve brought in some good players - similar to us in terms of the level.
“It’ll be a difficult game. If it’s windy, it’s pretty tough because it’s pretty open.
“I expect the Corinthian game will be a bit more physical.
“They’ll be tough, but it’s nice to get these games early.”
