Ray Turner says Faversham’s players can relax for a change when they visit Hythe on Saturday as the pressure will all be on the hosts.
After finishing in the play-offs in three of the past four seasons, Town find themselves heading to Reachfields sat closer to the drop-zone than the play-off places while the hosts are in the top-five and have an eye on a title challenge.
The Town boss said: “The pressure is all on them. They have got to be winning games like these, especially at home, if they have aspirations to win the league.
“Hopefully, that will relax us a bit and we can go there and play without any pressure. It’s not been the best hunting ground for us down the years. If we have a good day, we are certainly capable of upsetting them.”
It will mean a swift reunion with Dean Grant who headed to Reachfields last week after 17 goals for Faversham this season.
Turner said: “I’m sure he’ll want to score and Liam King is there as well. It’s always difficult playing against former players, I’m expecting both to play and it’s up to us to deal with them.”
With a trip to Herne Bay to follow on Monday (3pm), Turner added: “They are two difficult derbies for both sides. Herne Bay are in a similar situation to us this year. A couple of draws wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.”
Town’s 1-1 draw at home to Sittingbourne on Monday was just their second in 22 games this season and the first since mid-October.
Turner said: “I wouldn’t say I was content with a point but the way it’s been going, conceding late goals, at least we’ve walked off with something.
“We have to try and stay unbeaten. Stay steady. We’ve had a tumultuous period over the last couple of months. We can’t expect too much in this period. Instead of chasing wins, let’s try and make sure we come away with something.
“It looks like we’ve stopped the goals going in – conceding two in three – and you’ve always got a chance if you can do that. Our first task was making us strong at the back.”
Despite Town having lost 11 games already this season, Turner is not yet prepared to write the season off.
He said: “Our January fixtures are not too bad. We have played a lot of the top teams already. We have some games against sides down the bottom to come – although, of course, they will be fighting for everything.
“Nobody has outplayed us and really beaten us this season. We’ve generally been on top in games just not able to finish them off. We don’t want the season to drift away.”
