Faversham boss Ray Turner says his players are keen to get back where they belong after being left behind in this season’s promotion race.
After Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Cray Wanderers at the Shepherd Neame Stadium condemned Town to a 10th-placed finish, Turner and the players met on Tuesday night to discuss the future.
The manager said: “The consensus is that we want to do well and progress, we want to push on. There is perspective to be had – we started the season and finished the season with a strong squad. It was apparent that our squad in the middle months (after losing players to rival clubs) was not strong enough.“
He added: “I will be working harder this summer than in previous years in trying to freshen things up but we will certainly not be breaking things up.”
One player who is unlikely to be with Town for much of next season is midfielder Josh Stanford, who might seek a club closer to his university base of Oxford.
Turner said: “He’ll probably still be with us for pre-season but he’s going into his final year and we’ll try and find him a club closer to there as the 200-plus mile roundtrip for games can get a bit much.”
Turner admitted slipping two places to 10th after the final day draw didn’t bother him, adding: “Once we were out of the play-off race it didn’t really matter to me. We’re not looking to be eighth any more than we are 10th.
“We finished unbeaten at home in 14 games which was important but where we finish will be forgotten about in August.”
