Ray Turner says Faversham have not yet conceded defeat in their promotion push, though the odds are stacked against them
Saturday’s goalless draw at Lewes left Town eight points adrift of the final play-off place in Ryman League Division 1 South with just four games remaining.
Turner said: “We have conceded one in three and winning the last four games is realistic. I think the squad is as strong as it has been all season and it shows.
“Would 12 points do it? I’m not so sure. I just want to close the gap on the sides above us and take it to the last day within three points if possible - our goal difference stands up against the other sides.”
He added: “We are no further away than we were before Saturday but it has ticked another game off and we look like we’ve run out of games.
“We know the reality is that it’s probably going to be just out of our reach. We are paying the price for a bad couple of months earlier in the season.”
He added: “We were close at (sixth-placed) Lewes. We were more than a match for them. The fact their goalkeeper was man-of-the-match tells its own story. He made one double save in particular after about 80 minutes when it felt like we were building towards a winner.
“I can’t be critical of the players, we were excellent, our keeper didn’t have a save to make and the only thing we were missing was a winning goal.”
The first game of Town’s run-in is at already-relegated Godalming on Saturday (3pm) and Turner claimed: “We have to be careful with them, their last two results have been 1-0 wins over Lewes and Hastings.
“I don’t know if they underestimated them or if they couldn’t deal with them physically, but we have the attributes to deal with them. The most important thing is to not let them score first because they have proven they can defend a lead.”
Luke Griffiths is likely to feature after under-21 cup duty though Carl Rook is a doubt after picking up a knock at Lewes.
