Ray Turner revealed he was in a quandary this week regarding Faversham’s place in the Ryman League, Division 1 South promotion race.
Turner saw his side knocked-off top-spot on Saturday when their home game against Chipstead was postponed while Burgess Hill won at Hastings to take first place on goal difference.
The Lilywhites boss was faced with a who-to-support dilemma on Wednesday night as the leaders – who retain games in hand on Town – hosted Folkestone, who were four points behind in third - with Hill prevailing 3-1 to extend their lead over Turner's side.
Town have a 19-point cushion in the race for the top five and all but the most pessimistic Faversham fan will expect to see them in the end-of-season play-offs, however, with only one automatic promotion spot up for grabs, Turner said: “There are two ways of looking at it. A Folkestone win would have pegged Burgess Hill back, on the other hand, a Burgess Hill win might help them run away with the title but might leave our play-off place a little more secure.
"I wanted a Folkestone win though. I’m not looking downwards. I think second will become increasingly important as the season progresses."
Second-plays-fifth and third take-on fourth in the play-offs, with the top-four already looking assured – 12 points clear of fifth-place, currently occupied by Whyteleafe.
Turner added: “It was always inevitable that Burgess Hill would go top at some stage. We’ve done a good job to hold them off for as long as we have. Hopefully, we have the opportunity to get back there."
Hill have no league game on Saturday while Town host Three Bridges.
He added: “It’s up to us to take advantage of the fact we have played the likes of Folkestone and (fourth-placed) Merstham twice already and make the most of games against teams lower down the table.”
Maidstone loanee Charley Robertson has returned to the Gallagher Stadium but Turner revealed: “His loan has expired and he’s gone back there but it’s all a bit up in the air. We’re hoping we will see him back at the club this month if Maidstone can bring one or two in.”
