Bullish Ray Turner insists a return to winning ways is just around the corner for his Faversham side.

While off-field strides are made at the Shepherd Neame Stadium, on the field the Lilywhites have struggled, with Monday’s 2-1 defeat at Carshalton their fourth defeat in five Ryman League, Division 1 South games to leave them in 15th place.

On Saturday, manager Turner made the most of Town’s game at Molesey being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch by watching Carshalton beat fellow promotion-chasers Greenwich Borough, who will visit Salters Lane on Saturday (3pm).

Turner said: “Carshalton remind me of the Dulwich Hamlet team that ran away with it. They are probably the best side in the league at the moment.

“It was a strong performance from us. I was pleased with how we set up against them but they have so much ability on the break and their pace proved our downfall. I was pleased by 90% of it.

“There is a bit of a power shift in the league at the moment. The London teams like Carshalton and Tooting are right up there whereas the Kent sides are all below where they’d probably want to be.”

Town do have games in hand on the teams ahead of them as they seek to close an 11-point gap to the play-off places in which they have finished in three of the past four seasons, the first of which is at struggling Chatham on Monday (7.45pm).

Turner said: “Greenwich have power and strength which will be a challenge but probably not as much pace as Carshalton. If we play in the next two games like we did on Monday, we should pick up two wins and suddenly the job is easy again.”

He added: “The boys worked hard, there was plenty of effort and commitment and in terms of organisation, we looked back to our old selves. I’m sure results are not far around the corner.

“We just need to keep our heads down, work hard and believe in what we’re doing. This is not a disaster. We can still achieve our goal. We don’t want to allow any negativity to creep in but it’s my responsibility to lead the group out of this spell. We are not too down.”

Turner is hoping to add to his squad today (Thursday) after a seven-day approach for a defender from a Ryman League, Premier Division team is up, while Jamie Maxted was due to play for the under-21s against Sittingbourne last night (Wednesday) in a bid to regain match fitness.
