Faversham manager Ray Turner admitted to a sense of pride at guiding Faversham to their highest ever position in the football pyramid – although he knows they have achieved nothing yet.
Town’s 5-0 win over Walton & Hersham at Salters Lane on Tuesday night took the Lilywhites two points clear of unbeaten Burgess Hill, who had stormed clear of the pack during a run of 15-straight victories in all competitions.
Turner admitted: “It’s a proud moment for me and it also reflects positively on the hard work of countless people behind the scenes at the club while, of course, the players also deserve credit.
“I know we’ve been as high as second before, a couple of seasons before but we’ve never been top at this level.
“We’ve gone about things the right way. We’ve progressed slowly each year, not done it all in a year like some teams do. We’re building the club the right way.
Hastings visit Salters Lane on Saturday fifth bottom with just five wins in 17 games.
Turner said: “At the start of the season, they were arguably the biggest club in our division, in terms of supporter-base and financial backing but it’s not really worked out for them.
Luke Harvey is expected to feature for Town having scored twice for Woodstock Sports on
Saturday.
Harvey’s dual-registration performance paved the way for a seven-day approach from Whitstable for the former Herne Bay man but Turner said: “I don’t think he wants to go and we don’t want him to."
