Ray Turner has urged his Faversham players not to get carried away after picking up a win, saying they need to build an unbeaten run before they can think about saving their season.

Before Saturday’s 1-0 win at Chipstead, Town had lost five of their previous six on the road and taken only seven points from nine league games away from home all season.

Town boss Turner claimed he was happy to have ‘won ugly’ – as goalscorer Luke Harvey described it on twitter – and added: “We were not at our confident, flowing best but we did what we needed to do and found a way to win.

“We needed to steady the ship and start getting some points again. It did not come as a big surprise to me.

“We have not been playing too badly, it’s been the results rather than the performances.”

He added: “Saturday was actually comfortable. They only really had one chance but, of course, you’d like to win by more than a single goal, especially when you’re in our position.

“It was important not to concede. We needed a win and a clean sheet, especially as we lost Matt Bourne late on, Renford Tenyue wasn’t available and had to get Dan Carrington through a fitness test.”

Carrington and Dean Grant sat out training on Tuesday night and the whole squad were given Thursday night off training as Town prepare for the visit of South Park on Saturday (3pm) and trip to Hastings on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Park sit two places and two points below Town and will no doubt have half-an eye on their FA Trophy first round replay at North Leigh three days later, with the winner earning a trip to Tranmere in round two.

Turner said: “It’s not going to be easy, they are having a tremendous run, especially in the cups.

“They have some big ties coming up but we owe them one for knocking us out of the Trophy when we had a 2-0 lead.

“The most important thing for us is to build a little bit more. If we could make it back-to-back wins before going to Hastings, things would look better. We had a good win against Carshalton (on November 26) but ended up losing the next two games, even though we played well.

“We ended up taking a step forward then two steps back. We don’t want that again.”

He added: “We are not even halfway through the season, it looks a big gap to the play-offs (17 points) but Sittingbourne went on a four-game winning run which got them right up the edge of it.

“We can’t get carried away but if we could pick up another couple of wins and even some draws for a change, then things might start to pick up.”
