An emotional Ray Turner says he is proud of Faversham’s achievements this season, despite their penalty agony in the play-off semi-final.
Town lost 5-4 on spot-kicks after a goalless draw against Merstham at the Shepherd Neame Stadium on Tuesday night, falling short in the Ryman League Division 1 South play-offs for the second time in three years.
Town boss Turner admitted: “It’s going to take a while to sink in but I have absolute pride at what we have achieved as a football club. I’m proud to put the boys out there.
“It’s tough going into a dressing room after something like that - I got quite emotional in there. It’s been 10 months of hard work.
“They have been magnificent this year and we were one penalty kick away from taking our place in the final which I felt we fully deserved over our season with our record.”
The Lilywhites saw a shot cleared off the line during the 90 minutes and also rattled the bar in extra-time, but could not find a breakthrough against the Moatsiders who prevailed after substitute Stuart King saw his penalty saved by keeper Brannon Daly.
Turner added: “They they have given me everything, I couldn’t be prouder, they have all put their bodies on the line.
“They are a good side Merstham, but we had our chances. There was an ebb and flow to the game. It was a pretty dramatic game, I don’t know how exciting it was. We had our little spell, they had theirs. We obviously cancelled each other out and it didn’t look like any attempt was going to score to be honest.”
