Faversham Town are buoyant after their best result of the season set them up for the “ultimate test” against champions elect Folkestone on Saturday.
Manager Ray Turner couldn’t contain his excitement after the Lilywhites climbed back into the play-off places with a 2-1 win away to promotion rivals Guernsey on Sunday.
Now runaway leaders Invicta are heading to Salters Lane with Faversham looking to complete a clean sweep of league and cup wins over Neil Cugley’s men.
The play-offs looked like a pipe dream in October when Town dropped into the bottom half after losing six out of eight games but they’ve won 11 of their last 17 to put the smile back on Turner’s face. Liam King netted a stoppage-time winner in the Channel Islands after Faversham had earlier fallen behind.
Turner said: “It was a fantastic day, probably our best day of an up-and-down season.
“It was the best performance and probably the best result at the right time. Let’s hope we can use that to kick on now.
“It’s put us back in it again and it’s quite exciting, isn’t it? With the form of the teams in and around us and particularly just behind us, it’s all shaping up to be quite exciting.
“With Dorking and Worthing’s form, it looks like there are possibly only two places up for grabs so it’s a bit of a free-for-all.”
Folkestone are 13 points clear at the top but their visit holds no fear for the Lilywhites, who won 2-0 at the Fullicks Stadium in October.
Turner said: “It’s taken us five years to beat Folkestone and we’ve beaten them twice this season. I’m sure Neil Cugley will point to the fact one was a League Cup game but we’ve done well.
“We’re the only team with the chance of doing the league double over them and probably the only team for a long time to (potentially) win three games against Folkestone in a season. It’s a great incentive for the boys and it’s the ultimate test.”
