Ray Turner is not being greedy about reclaiming Faversham’s annual play-off place – he just wants to go into the final day of the season with a chance of making it.
Town’s eye-catching form has seen them storm from the bottom half of the Ryman League, Division 1 South table to the fringes of the play-off race in the past seven weeks, although a 1-1 draw at home to Horsham on Tuesday prevented them closing within six points of the top five with 12 games remaining.
Boss Turner said: “It was incredibly frustrating, they had one shot and scored. We just couldn’t find a way through.”
That result was a far cry from the 3-0 win against Corinthian Casuals at Salters Lane on Saturday.
Turner said: “It’s been a long time since we’ve beaten them. I only remember one win in my time and they beat us home and away last season. It was an enjoyable day, one of our best performances of the season, in front of a big crowd and a great result. It’s just a shame we couldn’t follow it up.”
Town have 26 points from 11 games since the turn of the year and Turner added: “The run we’re on is fantastic but we needed a result to keep pace.
“If we’d beaten Horsham, then I think a point on Saturday at (fourth-placed) Greenwich would have been enough to keep us in touch.
“As it is it probably means we need to win there. It certainly won’t be easy, Greenwich are up there for a reason but my players have a habit of surprising me and it wouldn’t be a shock if they could go there and win.”
Turner added: “We’ve always been a long-shot to make it (the play-offs) and logic dictates that we might just run out of games but our progress is nothing short of phenomenal.
“The programme for the game on Tuesday was originally printed for the scheduled game on January 21 that was postponed. I was looking at it and the table in that showed us 24 points behind fifth-place.
“I wanted to get back into the top-eight and get within five points of the play-offs on Tuesday. That hasn’t quite happened but we have to go again on Saturday.
“It’s one thing chasing the play-off places, it’s another staying in them. Generally, there is one side who drops out late on and generally that fifth place stays open to the wire.
“I’d take going into the last day of the season now being within three points, if you offered it to me now.”
Carl Rook (groin) is back at Greenwich while George Monger returns from suspension for Wednesday’s visit of mid-table South Park (7.45pm), who have up to nine games in hand.
