50ft oak 'blocked the view' - now it's been given the chop

Shepway Council says whoever cut down the tree is guilty of criminal damage
Shepway Council says whoever cut down the tree is guilty of criminal damage

A 100-year-old tree on one of Kent's historical promenades has been illegally cut down.

The criminal damage to the evergreen oak, on The Leas at Folkestone, which was 50ft tall, was reported to Shepway District Council on Wednesday morning.

In the past there have been complaints from nearby residents that the tree blocks their views across the English Channel.

Sarah Smith, a spokesman for the council, said: "We have reported this to the police. The tree is our property and in a conservation area. It is appalling what has been done."

Chris McCreedy, Shepway council's grounds maintenance contract manager, said: "This is not casual vandalism. This has been planned and someone must have seen or heard this happening. A chainsaw has been used to cut down the multiple stem trunks of the tree.

"These trees are vital to the stability of The Leas. Their root systems help stabilise the bank and their leaves dissipate rainwater, stopping it hitting the bank directly.

"Whoever is responsible for cutting down the tree or assisting with its planning is guilty of criminal damage."

Anyone who might be able to help police is asked to phone 01303 850055.
