Decision on future of Folkestone Airshow unlikely as organisers Open Air Promotions weigh up finances

A decision over the future of Folkestone Airshow is unlikely for “some time” as organisers deliberate over finances.

Open Air Promotions says it will release revenue figures by the end of this week after warning that the future of the show hangs in the balance.

About 190,000 people witnessed the spectacle which boasted numerous aerobatic displays including the RAF’s Red Arrows.

Red Arrows opened the show at Folkestone on June 7

But despite the turnout, Open Air Promotions says takings were so low that the show may no longer be viable.

Director Yvonne Holder claimed she even canvassed the crowds with a collection bucket, yet still people were not donating.

She now says the show’s future is being evaluated and that the process could be a prolonged one.

“Sadly income did not match the high costs of staging this quality event and at the same time provide – as was planned – a sound financial platform for future shows,” said Ms Holder.

“As a consequence we are considering very carefully whether a show on this year’s scale and based on sponsorships, donations and public generosity is viable.

“It may be some time before decisions can be made.”

The promoter refuses to be drawn on whether it is considering a scaled-back version of the event in future and a spokeswoman said simply “all options” were being looked into.

Folkestone Air Show was cancelled in 2013 due to lack of funding and the organiser’s inability to satisfy safety requirements.

Ms Holder said: “Let’s not take anything away from the fact that the show attracted and gave great pleasure to scores of thousands of visitors and residents.”
