Children in Folkestone are hoping to see their name in shining lights this summer after creating an 80s music video parody against littering.
With thousands of tourists set to descend on Folkestone's beaches this summer, theatrical children in the district have gone in front of the camera to share an important message about binning your rubbish.
The skit of Wham!'s Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, entitled Pick Me Up Before You Go Go, was launched last week as part of Folkestone and Hythe District Council's campaign to protect the environment.
The catchy tune aims to persuade people to think twice before dropping trash.
Children from performing arts group, NEON, at the Folkestone Quarterhouse star in the video while council staff on their lunch break making a cameo appearance.
Singing drink cans also have a starring role in the video originally made famous by the late Wham! frontman George Michael. This version has been created by council staff.
To follow up on the video, bright 1980s-style posters and billboards will be appearing across the town to back-up the message that 'leaving litter is a no-no'.
Councillor Stuart Peall, cabinet member for the environment, said: "It would be great if everyone could get behind this campaign and start singing along too – maybe even make their own video.
"The more people who support it, the greater the chance of the message hitting home - and less litter being left behind."
Extra staff, bins and vehicles were brought in over the summer to help keep pace with increased demand, and councillors recently voted to spend up to £83,000 on smart solar bins in the district at the Coastal Park.
Cllr Peall continued: "But we need everyone to do their bit too. If you’ve enjoyed yourself on one of our fantastic beaches or in our parks or gardens, please put your litter in a bin or take it home. Pick it up before you go go."
Ioannis Ioannou from the Creative Foundation said. "The NEON kids and their parents wholeheartedly embraced the council’s initiative and instantly agreed to feature in the short film to raise awareness for a problem that is so pronounced during the summer months.
"Folkestone has once again become a popular destination for visitors and we must make sure it looks its best at all times.
"Our young people thoroughly enjoyed the filming experience and have been impressed with the outcome and reaction to the film."
