Firefighters believe a blaze which damaged a two-storey derelict building was started deliberately.

It is the third time this year crews have been called out to the house in Wear Bay Road in Folkestone.

Police are now investigating the blaze which is being treated as a suspected arson.

Flames started in the kitchen area at around 9.30pm last night causing damage to the room.

Mick Goldsmith from Folkestone fire station said the house is "structurally sound" but there is a lot of smoke damage because of the other incidents.

He said: "It's not the first time we've been there, three including last night this year.

"This was a fire in what was the kitchen.

"It was contained to the kitchen but because it's not the first one there's a lot of smoke damage.

"Structurally it's sound, it's only superficial.

"Police have boarded it up and they are trying to get hold of the owner."

Crews used a high pressure hose reel jet to put out the flames.

There are no reports of any injuries, and the cause is thought to be deliberate - sparked by someone maliciously igniting something.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "Police have spoken to some witnesses and carried out house-to-house enquiries and would like to hear from anyone else who might be able to help with their investigation."
