Materials containing asbestos have been found at a beach that was closed yesterday, a council has confirmed.

The beach at The Warren in Folkestone remains shut today following coastal erosion.

Experts are on site working to remove the asbestos, as well as testing for any other contaminating material.

The closure was ordered after the sea was found to have eroded part of the cliff which contained the hazardous substance.

A Folkestone and Hythe District Council spokesman said: "Based on the current information we have, we understand the risk to public and animal health is low.

"We are continuing to work with specialist teams within the Environment Agency to ensure appropriate actions are taken.

"We are treating this situation as a high priority and our officers will be assessing the site on a daily basis.

"The apron is still accessible, but we urge residents and visitors to follow all signage and stay away from the area which has been closed off to the public."

No timetable has been given to reopen the beach, which will remain closed until all dangerous substances have been removed.
