Patients were put at risk after asbestos was disturbed at a hospital in Folkestone.

Potentially harmful particles leaked when the roof of the Royal Victoria Hospital, in Radnor Park Avenue, was damaged on Tuesday night.

Staff arriving at work on Wednesday discovered a hole in the roof in the clinical waste area of the hospital.

Special cleaners were brought in to ensure that the area below the roof damage had not been contaminated.

Police are now appealing for information about who might have caused the damage.

It is thought that the friends and family of anyone involved could still be at risk from the asbestos.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "Asbestos particles released when the material is damaged or broken up can be harmful to health and can be carried on skin, clothing or tools putting friends and families at risk.

"Anyone involved in damaging the roof and believing that they may have been exposed should seek medical help."
