A 'bomb' which was unearthed during dredging works has turned out to be a false alarm.

Navy bomb disposal teams were called to Folkestone Harbour after coastal defence works on the seafront dug up the explosive.

It's now been confirmed to be a pressure vessel.

It was found near the promenade at 8.45am.

Navy teams were waiting for low tide to detonate the suspected bomb, but later assessments showed it wasn't an explosive.

A police spokesman said: "A member of the public had found what was believed to be a wartime munition.

"Officers have cordoned off the area in Folkestone Harbour and the army's explosives ordnance disposal team has been called to assist."

A witness said: "There are a lot of people standing down on the quay.

"They are not allowed down there into the harbour.

"The company that's doing the dredging are not letting anyone pass."

It's now being taken away from the scene and will be disposed of.
