Trains are running again after a lorry ploughed into a bridge this afternoon.

Passengers are being warned to expect "residual delays" after the incident near Folkestone West station.

Services between Dover and Ashford were initially cancelled to allow engineers to check for damage.

The incident was reported at around 12.30pm but services returned to action just 35 minutes later.

Trains were temporarily stopped after a passer-by reported the bridge over Beechborough Road had been struck by the vehicle.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "We inspected the bridge and it was reopened at 1.05pm.

"There were two changes to trains services as a result: 1137 St Pancras International - St Pancras International will return to Ashford and run via Canterbury West.

"The 1027 St Pancras International - St Pancras International will reverse at Dover Priory and run via Canterbury East and run fast to Ebbsfleet International.

"The last 2 trains in either direction have gone through, one with a 3 minute delay towards Ashford and the other one on-time towards Dover.

"The line is now open again and running trains at normal speed."
