An iconic fixture of the town's coastline, The Grand features in Martin Easdown's recent book Fashionable Folkestone.

The Grand Mansions were opened next to the Metropole in September 12 1903, designed and built by Daniel Baker.

It featured a palm court - as shown in the smaller photograph - which became known as the 'Monkey House' due to how many people peered in.

Edward VII opened the hotel's new dance floor in 1909 and had the first dance on it with Queen Alexandra.

The Grand was born after The Metropole had just been constructed, after the builder was left disappointed for not securing the building contract.

He became determined to build a rival establishment which was better in every way.

Mr Baker used waterproof cavity wall insulation, a steel frame and – said to be a world first – infilled it with reinforced concrete. He also used suspended ceilings for improved soundproofing.
