A charity is warning of bogus door to door callers pretending to be fundraisers after receiving a number of complaints in Kent.
SSAFA, the armed forces charity, says the fraudsters are largely operating around Folkestone and Dover, however complaints have been received from further afield.
In a statement issued today by Folkestone and Hythe District Council (FHDC) the charity advised people to be cautious.
“Please be aware that there are bogus collectors purporting to be from SSAFA, they are operating on a door to door basis in Kent.
“SSAFA does not conduct door to door collections.
“All SSAFA collections are conducted at organised events, never door to door.
“All SSAFA volunteers carry photographic identity cards,” the statement says.
The charity, which supports current and ex-military personnel, advises people who are approached to immediately call the police.
Kent Police released a seven point guide on how to deal with scam artists - including locking back doors and windows before answering the door.
Using spy-holes and door chains, checking identification, and refusing to let people in without the relevant documents are part of the guidelines.
A police statement available on its website adds: “Most people who call at your home will be genuine.
“But sometimes people can try to trick their way into your home to steal your valuables and money.
“They are known as 'distraction burglars' or 'bogus callers'.”
A SSAFA spokesman added: “Unfortunately, we’ve had reports of individuals pretending to volunteer for SSAFA and going door-to-door asking for donations.
“We want to confirm, that SSAFA does not collect door-to-door.
“If you experience somebody claiming to fundraise for SSAFA in this way, we ask that you either call your local SSAFA branch or the police on 101 immediately.’”
