Damian Collins has revealed who he is backing in the Tory leadership race.

The Folkestone and Hythe MP today nailed his colours to the mast in support of Home Secretary Theresa May.

The party's leadership was thrown up in the air after Prime Minister David Cameron announced he was resigning following the Brexit result last week.

Mr Collins, who campaigned to remain in the EU, has not wasted any time in announcing his support for Mrs May to become the next PM.

He said: "I'm supporting Theresa May to become our next Prime Minister. She is a serious figure with the experience to lead and unite our country."

Speaking after the referendum result last Friday he warned the country needed a "period of reassurance" and with Cameron not stepping down immediately he said he felt "it gives us a chance of stability".

He added he felt the next leader should have plenty of experience.

The Conservative Party will select the new leader later this year as it today emerged Michael Gove confirmed his candidacy while Liam Fox has also confirmed he will be running.

Boris Johnson had been expected to announce himself ahead of the nominations deadline at midday but announced in central London just before the deadline he would not be standing.

Ashford MP Damian Green has also come out today in support of Mrs May.
