Large warship spotted off Kent coast is Royal Navy tanker

The large and dark silhouette of a warship spotted off the Kent coast sparked concern this afternoon.
But the vessel is a Royal Navy tanker, RFA Wave Knight.
The ship is currently operating in the Channel on training operations with helicopters flying nearby as well.
People contacted KentOnline and posted on social media asking what the vessel was doing in the channel, but fears can be allayed.
Training exercises have been planned to take place around Folkestone throughout the month after several unmarked cars and aircraft were spotted around the town yesterday, police confirmed.
RFA Wave Knight with pennant number A389 is a fast fleet tanker launched in 2000 and entering service in 2003.
The ship, part of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, is capable of operating in support of amphibious forces, anti-surface and anti-submarine operations.
Her main role is to supply Royal Navy warships around the world with fuel and supplies.
The ship is crewed by 72 Royal Fleet Auxiliary personnel while also being able to host 26 crew from the Royal Navy for helicopter and weapons systems.
She is able to deliver fuel at sea through an RAS (replenishment at sea) rig on both sides of the ship and astern to other vessels.
The public has become more aware of military vessels in the Channel since the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov "skulked past" earlier in the year escorted by a Royal Navy frigate and RAF fighters.
