Man, 82, killed in Cheriton High Street crash named locally as Brian Hawkes

A pensioner killed in a crash in Cheriton yesterday has been named locally as Brian Hawkes.

The 82-year-old lived in Lawrence Close, Cheriton, and was well known for his silver Vauxhall Firenza classic car.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash, which happened in High Street at around 4pm on Saturday.

Officers say an 82-year-old man died at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

Two vehicles were involved in the crash – the Vauxhall Firenza and a grey Proton Gen-2.

Witnesses reported seeing the air ambulance land on the recreation ground in nearby Weymouth Road. Fire crews also attended the scene.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: “Two appliances attended. Crews carried out a rapid extrication of an elderly gentleman due to nature of his injuries.

“They worked closely with paramedics to conduct CPR.

“Crews also contained a fuel spill from a vehicle due to a ruptured fuel tank and made the scene safe.”

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death while being uninsured. He has been released on bail pending further inquiries until Tuesday, December 8.

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit carried out inquiries at the scene.
