Controversial plans for more than 1,200 homes on the Shorncliffe Garrison site go before councillors tonight.

The plans are recommended for approval by officers and the application is one of the largest Shepway District Council has had to consider.

The planning committee will meet at the Civic Centre in Castle Hill Avenue in Folkestone at 7pm with the Taylor Wimpey development the only item on the agenda.

It is proposed to build the homes over four phases, with an overall completion date estimated to be in 2030.

Residents have said the narrow Horn Street rail bridge could not cope with the volume of traffic resulting from the scheme. Taylor Wimpey proposes installing traffic lights at the junction.

Despite being recommended for approval by SDC’s planning officers, both Folkestone town and Sandgate parish councils object on the grounds the bridge is too narrow and that traffic assessments have so far not been suitable.

Kent Highways says it is satisfied the provisions proposed by Taylor Wimpey are suitable to cope with the traffic demands.
