A dog has died after a rescue effort was abandoned due to rising tides.

A large operation was launched on the Sunny Sands Beach in Folkestone yesterday evening, after a dog got trapped in a pile of rocks.

The owner called 999 at around 6.49pm, prompting a number of rescue vehicles to rush to the scene.

Sadly the tide was quickly rising and the effort was called off at 8.36pm.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "Two fire engines, a boat and the technical rescue unit were sent to the scene.

"Heavy rescue cutting equipment and drills were used to cut away rocks to try and reach the dog, but sadly due the speed of the rising sea water it made it impossible to carry out a rescue safely, and it had to be abandoned.

"The crews in attendance worked as fast as they could and did everything possible under the circumstances to save the family pet.

"Our thoughts are with the owner at this sad time."

The rescue attempt comes less than a week after crews worked to save a dog from a cliff ledge at The Warren, also in Folkestone.
