The dramatic moment a tree tumbled down a cliff towards walkers in the third landslide to hit a town in a month has been caught on camera.

The footage, which has been shared online, has left residents in Folkestone concerned over why so many landslides are occurring.

Jon Beard was walking along Sunny Sands beach earlier today when the tree suddenly plunged down the hill, landing just feet from groups of people.

Passersby can be heard shouting and laughing as the mound falls towards them.

Mr Beard, who grew up in the town, said: “I got to the spot a few minutes before the actual landslide and noticed chunks of soil rolling down the slope were getting bigger so I decided to wait.

“A few minutes later, the whole slide happened.

“I was in the right place at the right time to be able to capture it.”

It comes after The Road of Remembrance in Folkestone was hit with a second landslide earlier this week.

The road, which is blocked by huge mounds of earth and plants, has been closed off since January 27.

The affected area now appears to be roughly three times bigger than it previously was.

The video of the landslide today has received a huge reaction after being posted in the Folkestone Residents Group on Facebook, receiving almost 700 likes and more than 200 comments.

Mat Mackenzie believes the recent bout of rain is “causing problems”.

He added: “This area is gault clay on sandstone, and is very unstable.

“All this rain is really causing problems.”

Jackie Bispham said: “Another one bites the dust.

“Seriously though, it's very scary, all these landslides.”

Sue Treloar added: “I was looking at that bit yesterday as I walked past it with the dog, it was only a matter of time.”

A Folkestone & Hythe District Council spokesperson said: “The area was fenced off shortly after the incident on Sunday and we are in the process of clearing the debris.”

Kent County Council have been approached for comment.
