Emergency crews at flat fire in Connaught Road, Folkestone

A man has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after a flat fire in Folkestone this morning.

Four fire engines were called to the blaze in a ground-floor flat in Connaught Road around 9.11am today.

Police and paramedics are also in attendance, and the road has been taped off.

A SECAmb service spokesman said the man was treated at the scene and was taken to the William Harvey Hospital in a serious condition.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "Crews are using breathing apparatus to check the building."

One eyewitness said he heard a series of sirens rush to the three-storey building.

Photographer Gary Browne said: "There are four of five police cars there but the fire is almost out now.

There is a heavy presence of emergency crews

"There's quite a bit of smoke damage to the back of the building and all the windows are blown out.

"There were a few people standing round and one young man with a silver foil blanket wrapped around him."

A police spokesman said officers were at the scene to assist the fire service.

She said: "The incident is ongoing. Officers have put a cordon in place to secure the area."

A fire service spokesman said the cause of the fire is not yet known.
