Fishermen will be firing up their engines for the annual trawler race this Saturday.

The race, which sets off from the harbour at midday, crowns a weekend of events celebrating Folkestone’s fishing heritage and a host of activities on the quayside throughout the weekend.

Part of the Folkestone Festivals programme and organised with Folkestone Trawlers and the National Coastwatch, it is the second time the race has been held since its return last year after a decade away.

Prizes will be awarded for the winners, the best dressed crew and best decorated boat.

A host of events and live music will be on both Saturday and Sunday, August 1 and 2 on The Stade with the RNLI, emergency services and fairground rides providing entertainment.

Market and food stalls will provide fish baps and there’s also The Mariner’s fourth fish pie competition.

All entries must have a flamenco twist and calls on budding chefs to enter their best efforts.

The Folkestone Fishing Heritage Museum will be open from 10am to 4pm at the Old Booking Hall in the old port terminal in the harbour.

Cath Mison from Folkestone Festivals said: “This weekend is a free event for the community, not only for the town to have some fun but to increase footfall and tourists along the quay, to encourage more people to support their local fishermen and buy fresh fish whilst enabling us to highlight the magnitude of our fishing heritage and the importance of keeping it.

“To help us recreate the nostalgia of our local trawler race we are asking if any members of the public have any footage or photos of previous races we could utilise and share.”
